Tucson is home to Arizona’s first university. The University of Arizona, founded in 1885, is considered a Public Ivy (provides an Ivy League collegiate experience at public school prices) and in 2007 had a total enrollment of 37,217 students. Offering 334 fields of study at four levels (bachelors, masters, doctoral, and first professional), the UA is also renowned for being the only medical school in Arizona to grant M.D. degrees. The university is also home to one of the nation’s most successful men’s basketball teams. The Wildcats have played in the NCAA Tournament 23 consecutive years and took home the trophy in 1998.

Another local favorite pastime is watching the Tucson Sidewinders baseball team, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, at Tucson Electric Park. During Spring Training, Tucson is home to the Diamondbacks, White Sox, and Rockies professional baseball teams. Games promise fun for the whole family and you can’t beat this up-close and personal experience with the players for such an affordable price!
The ever-growing city of Tucson is economically centered on three major employers: Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, The University of Arizona, and Raytheon Missile Systems. Davis-Monthan alone employs 7,000 military along with 1,600 civilians and has an estimated $750 million economic impact on Tucson. Raytheon employs 11,000 citizens in the Tucson area and generates $4.5 million in revenue annually.
